TRU Climate Change Accountability Reports

TRU has been a carbon neutral institution since 2009. Like all other BC public institutions, we report annually on greenhouse gases to the BC government from four main sources: natural gas usage, electricity usage, fuel from fleet vehicles, and paper usage. In 2020, the name of the report changed from ‘Carbon Neutral Action Report’ to ‘Climate Change Accountability Report’.

TRU Composting for a Green Campus

This report outlines the findings from a January to April 2014 pilot study on composting food waste at the TRU Kamloops campus. It was conducted by TRU co-op research student Allysha Sorba.

TRU Electric Vehicle Suitability Assessment

As part of the Plug-in BC program, the Fraser Basin Council and FleetCarma partnered with the TRU Office of Environment and Sustainability to determine electric vehicle suitability for its fleet during the 2013-2014 school year. Fourteen of its fleet vehicles were involved in the assessment and after a three week period that assessed driving patterns, it was determined that many of the vehicles were suitable to be replaced — once they came to the end of their life-cycle — with an electric vehicle. It was determined that the extra up-front retail cost of doing so would be more than offset by the long-term savings during the anticipated life span of an electric vehicle.

TRU Investments Information

TRU Has adopted the UN's principles of responsible investing. TRU is a signatory to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (those who manage TRU’s funds already are) and TRU has changed its Investment Objectives Policy to reflect this participation. According to the UN PRI website, “Responsible investment is an approach to investment that explicitly acknowledges the relevance to the investor of environmental, social and governance factors, and of the long-term health and stability of the market as a whole. It recognizes that the generation of long-term sustainable returns is dependent on stable, well-functioning and well governed social, environmental and economic systems.” With respect to fossil fuels, this allows TRU to be engaged and invest in those corporations that are actively searching for cleaner methods of fossil fuel extraction, alternative forms of renewable/clean energy and reclamation, while yielding returns that support the needs of TRU’s students and researchers.

TRU Marketing and Communication Research Project

This report, conducted between January and April 2012, lays out nine recommendations for the TRU Sustainability Office to consider in order to A) promote its very existence to the TRU community, and B) better promote the variety of initiatives that it's involved with.

TRU Strategic Energy Managment Plan

TRU's Strategic Energy Management Plan is a working document that demonstrates environmental leadership and stewardship throughout campus buildings and grounds. It is updated annually by the Sustainability Office and identifies energy efficiency objectives in order to continuously reduce energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, costs, and maintenance needs, while maintaining work and study spaces that are safe, healthy, and inviting to be in. In order to achieve these objectives it will implement and/or improve upon the following:

  • Sound operating and maintenance practices
  • Institution wide "green" purchasing policies
  • Incorporating energy efficiency into all new building designs
  • Utilizing an effective monitoring and tracking system
  • Engaging with energy users by implementing effective behaviour change programs
