Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply to the Master of Nursing program?
Do I have the option to reduce my course load?
Students will work with their supervisor to determine progress options that best meet their needs. Students have up to five years to complete the program. Domestic students will have the ability to take a Leave of Absence in extenuating circumstances. International students must be enrolled in six credits per semester.
Can I take the program online?
The program can be completed entirely via distance for domestic students only. International students must attend the courses on-campus. TRU MN core courses offer a blended learning model with a mix of synchronous online and in- class learning. Opportunities exist for students to connect remotely for classes. After core courses are completed, international students are required to enroll in on-campus electives. Domestic students may enroll on-campus or online electives.
Where can I take the statistics prerequisite?
TRU offers online or on-campus statistics courses. Registration is ongoing, and the courses are self-paced. Alternative undergraduate statistics courses, including those with a health or social science focus, are available. Examples of these courses are STAT 1201 (or 1200) or PSYC 2101 (or 2100). Please email masterofnursing@tru.ca if you have questions about the eligibility of a specific course.
Do I have to complete the statistics and ENGL 1100 before I start?
You can submit your application before completing these courses. Acceptance to the program will be conditional on completing the admission requirements before the MN program starts.
Do I have to be registered in BC
All students are required to provide verification of registration as an active practising nurse from the regulatory body of the jurisdiction where you live.
Students wishing to obtain work as an RN in Canada are responsible for completing the registration process with BCCNM (or other province). Students cannot call themselves an RN or practice as an RN in BC unless they are registered with BCCNM. However, completed Canadian registration is not a requirement of enrolling in or graduating from the MN.
International students who graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing degree (or equivalent) with valid licensure are eligible to apply.
What are the admission requirements?
What will my schedule look like full time vs. part time?
Example schedules can be found here. Students will work with their supervisor to determine progress options that best meet their needs.
How many hours a week will I be in class?
Classroom hours will vary depending on student status (full or part time) and selected progress options. TRU MN core courses offer a blended learning model with a mix of online and in-class learning. Opportunities exist for students to connect remotely for some classes. Some courses may be offered in a weekend intensive timeline format. Students can take distance-learning electives.
Each theory course is approximately three hours per week. Courses typically run in the evening from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Can I get transfer credit for prior learning?
There may be an option to receive credit for program prerequisite requirements. Contact masterofnursing@tru.ca for more details.
There may be an option to receive credit for graduate courses taken prior to entry into the TRU MN program. Contact masterofnursing@tru.ca for more details.
Can I still do an internship if I am not registered in BC?
The option may exist to complete either an alternative (non-internship) elective or to find a placement that does not require RN status. Both require prior approval of the student’s supervisor and the Dean.
Is there an option to enter the program as an RPN?
We welcome applications from RPNs who have a baccalaureate degree in psychiatric nursing.
