Veterinary Technology Diploma
Highlights
Interact daily with a menagerie of small animals and gain experience with livestock, wildlife and birds as a veterinary technician, assisting veterinarians and veterinary scientists. The Veterinary Technology program gives you the skills to work in diagnostic testing, radiography, medical procedures, office protocol, animal nursing, anesthesia, and surgical assistance.
Careers
Although most graduates are employed in private veterinary practices, positions may be obtained in the emerging biotechnical fields, animal shelters, zoological parks and other animal oriented areas in the public and private sectors.
Admission Requirements
Selective admission
- Grade 12 (or equivalent)
- English Studies 12/English First Peoples 12 with a minimum C+ (or equivalent)
- Foundations of Math 11 with a minimum C+ (or equivalent)
- Life Sciences 11 with a minimum C+ (or equivalent)
- Strongly recommended: Anatomy & Physiology 12
Mandatory Application Documents
- Transcripts. All transcripts from high schools and post-secondary schools must be issued directly to TRU from the institution(s) attended.
How to submit transcripts - Proof of Canadian Citizenship (copy of birth certificate or passport) or copy of permanent resident card if not a Canadian citizen.
- Resume/CV. Note relevant work experience, any certification(s) or award(s), if applicable.
- Registered Veterinary Technologist interview. Interview a certified veterinary professional. You will receive a web link to provide this document after submitting your application.
- Know, Wonder, Learn Questionnaire. Watch video 1 & video 2 and complete a know, wonder, learn questionnaire. You will receive a web link to provide this document after submitting your application.
- Introduction Video. Create a 4-7-minute introductory video.
- Three references. One referee must be from animal related work or volunteer experience; the other two may be from non-animal work or volunteer experience. References from family members or friends are not considered suitable for this requirement.
A web link to a fillable online referee form will be provided to you to send to your referees after submitting your application. - If you are a permanent resident of Canada or a Canadian citizen but did not complete your high school or post-secondary education in Canada, you will need to provide a Language Proficiency test – such as a TOELF or IELTS meeting TRU’s English Language Proficiency Requirements for Academic Study).
Note: Applicants should have an interest in working with and caring for animals. This includes such areas as farms, SPCA, wildlife refuges or any other animal oriented facility. Students should have a desire to develop manual and technical skills. Consultation with practicing Registered Veterinary Technologists is mandatory.
